About the MAYS

The Metropolitan Area Youth Symphony was conceived to continue the legacy of its inspiration and honorary founder, Jonathan May. Since 1984, Mr. May followed his dream of bringing a well-rounded music education to thousands of young students of the Central Florida community. His wife, Mrs. Maureen May and close friend Mr. Michael Miller, themselves distinguished musicians and teachers,  founded this orchestra to further Mr. May's life's mission. The MAYS features eight orchestral groups throughout the Orlando and Lake County areas spanning beginner, intermediate and advanced skill levels, as well as a variety of chamber ensemble opportunities, theory and composition, workshops, and a recital series. With classes and direction by those dedicated to the musical mission of Mr. May, the MAYS is a testament to his commitment and to his influence.

Symphony—The Symphony is the MAYS’ most advanced full orchestra ensemble. This top-level group rehearses and performs a vast array of standard orchestral repertoire, and is continually challenged to reach for the finest in orchestral performance. Being a member of the Symphony indicates a high level of technique and musicianship, and this group focuses on understanding the depth and nuances of music, like color, tonal quality, and interpretation.

Sundays - 3:45pm to 6:00pm

Repertory Orchestra
—The Repertory Orchestra provides the essential opportunity for young musicians to grow and develop their musical skills in the full orchestra setting. In the Repertory Orchestra, students are taught skills to refine their orchestral playing skills, abilities that include listening, adjusting, and learning to play in a large ensemble. This orchestra is designed to nourish the musical abilities of students, and help them develop skills to play in an ensemble reading off larger scores and with new sounds.

Sundays - 1:30pm to 3:30pm

—The Intermezzo is a group designed to take on the great works for string orchestra. This intermediate to advanced ensemble provides a chamber setting for young string musicians to develop their ability to play with other string instruments, requiring a focused attention on tone, intonation, bow control and other aspects of string playing. This ensemble is for the serious string player, and provides the opportunity for strong development as a string musician.

Sundays - 2:45pm to 4:30pm

—The Concertino is an entry-level group for beginning string players ages 5 and older, and has been developed to help the budding string musicians learn to listen and play music with other string players. This ensemble provides students with the opportunity to work closely with peers and instructors to learn the first levels of playing together and mastering the string instruments.

Sundays - 1:30pm to 2:30pm

All orchestras meet Sundays at St. Alban's Anglican Cathedral
