The Music Program at Florida Memorial University has a special focus on students reared in the oral musical traditions of the African Diaspora such as jazz, gospel, R&B, and the many genres and instrumental styles of Latin and Caribbean music and is accredited by the National Association of School of Music – nasm.arts-accredit.org.
These students have tremendous technical ability but may lack the necessary theoretical knowledge. The program endeavors to bring the students’ theoretical ability on par with their tremendous musical skills by the end of their matriculation at Florida Memorial University. Students may choose from the Music degree offerings in the program.
The Bachelor of Music is a professional degree in Music. It is offered in either Church Music or Jazz Studies. These programs are designed to place qualified individuals in the profession of music as performers or directors. The curriculum provides for the cultivation of requisite skills, the acquisition of professional knowledge, and the development of aesthetic appreciation with opportunities for research and internships with professional organizations and businesses which will prepare them for numerous employment opportunities and graduate studies. The Bachelor of Science degree in Music (K-12) provides students with educational theory, methods of teaching and management principles and practices. This teacher preparation program has a broad foundation in many academic areas and specialization in all general areas of music.
The Bachelor of Arts degree is a liberal arts degree with a major in music. Students are exposed to a broad program of general education and are allowed to incorporate eighteen elective credits in an area of their choice. This allows students to prepare for graduate studies in or entry into areas such as Music Therapy, Music Business, Technology, and Law. Emphasis is placed upon development of musicianship, performing ability and overall student growth.
The Music Program supports the mission of the department and the university as a whole. The program assists students and faculty in the development of their full potential, active engagement in the community and the global music industry, and in other creative and intellectual endeavors.
